ArriveCAN app causes significant delays entering Canada, expert testimony confirms – Lake Superior News

Michelle Ferreri, Shadow Conservative Tourism Minister

SAULT STE MARIE, THUNDER BAY, OTTAWA, ONTARIO ~~~~~ June 16, 2022 (LSNews) Michelle Ferreri, Conservative Shadow Minister for Tourism, and Tony Baldinelli, Conservative Shadow Minister for Manufacturing and Export Promotion, released the following statement after witnesses testified before the International Trade Committee on the study of the “impacts potential of the ArriveCAN application on certain Canadian sectors”:

“Hit first and hard hit, Canada’s tourism sector has been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic and still faces a long road to recovery.

“The tourism industry hopes to finally see a recovery this summer season, but the federal government is standing in the way. By stepping up efforts to mandate mandatory use of the ArriveCAN app, the Liberal government is actively discouraging travel to Canada.

“Yesterday, in testimony before the International Trade Committee, we learned that US visits are not expected to fully recover to pre-pandemic levels until 2026. This is extremely discouraging as US visits to the region of Niagara represent 50% of the revenue generated by local tourism. In terms of jobs, 40,000 people in Niagara work in tourism and the last thing they need is for the federal government to stand in the way of their economic and financial recovery.

“The Tourism Industry Association of Canada, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Customs and Immigration Union have all confirmed to the committee that the ArriveCAN app is causing significant delays at international ports of entry and economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic. Its continued mandatory use has a disproportionate impact on travel and tourism in Canada.

“This important committee meeting provided ample evidence that ArriveCAN, as it currently functions, is hampering travel, tourism and our overall economic recovery.

“Conservatives have asked for a plan from the federal government to get Canada out of this pandemic and on the road to recovery, we have asked for the removal of the remaining federal COVID-19 restrictions that are stifling the recovery, and for an end to the use required from the ArriveCAN app.

Michael Ferreri is at parliament hill When you ask questions, you learn why we have such significant delays.

“Instead, the Liberals have failed Canadians, and now travelers and the tourism industry as a whole are the victims of the ArriveCAN app which is becoming a barrier to travel and a crisis from this Liberal government to our borders and airports.

“Time is running out for the Liberals to fix the problem they created, to save the 2022 summer tourist season in Canada.
