SUMMERSIDE, PEI — Barbara Gallant has announced her candidacy for the Summerside City Council seat for Ward 5 Hillcrest – Platte.
With 40 years of experience serving and working in Summerside, Gallant said she’s seen how the city has grown and diversified over the years.
She is the owner of Barb’s Esthetics and was Executive Director of the PEI Lest We Forget Veterans Committee and held volunteer positions at Parkview Place and the Royal Canadian Legion in Summerside.
Gallant said the city needs to make sure it meets the needs of its residents in an age-friendly way.
She said she believes the city should do more to address affordable housing, rising costs of living and doctor shortages that impact access to medical services.
Gallant expressed concern about the need for a reliable and affordable transportation system in Summerside as well as connecting roads to other communities, especially Charlottetown, so that people can access the medical services they need or visit aging family members who need support.
She said she would take a stand with citizens and create safe spaces to hear the concerns of all voters and represent them in council chambers.
“Now that we are post-COVID and in a place of recovery, we need to consider how we can help the citizens of Summerside recover from the harsh economic and social impacts,” Gallant said.
“We need to ensure that we are building inclusive communities that include fairness and equality for all members of our society.”
