PSA: Kate Middleton wasn’t going to let a size issue stop her from getting the ring of her dreams. New reports indicate that the Duchess of Cambridge actually altered her engagement ring after Prince William proposed to Kenya.
The literal rock The ring, a ~nonchalantly~ 12-karat blue sapphire masterpiece surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds, was given to Kate in 2010 and (fun fact!) has remained on my Pinterest mood board ever since. However, just before her and Prince William’s iconic wedding on April 29, 2011, “Kate actually had the ring altered – as she thought the band was too big and was ‘twirling on her finger’, according to The mirror.
The outlet added that the ring was eventually given to royal jeweler G. Collins and Sons, “who made the alteration to make it fit better”.
“However, rather than resizing the ring, it is believed that small platinum beads were attached to the inside of the bottom of the ring, to give it a better fit,” the report continues. Around the same time, a source responded to The sun that even though Kate “loves” the ring and “didn’t want to make a fuss”, it ended up being too big and that was a problem.
“A bride’s worst nightmare is to look down and see that her ring has fallen off,” the source told the newspaper, per Sky News. “One can only imagine how amplified this is when you marry the future King of England.” Alright, points have definitely been scored, insider @anonymous!
TBH even more interesting is that according to the documentary Diana’s storyKate almost didn’t receive her late mother-in-law’s ring because *drum roll, please* it actually belonged to Prince Harry. Apparently, Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, said the Duke of Sussex ‘selflessly’ gave up the ring so his older brother could give it to his then-fiancée Kate. “After Diana died in a car accident in Paris in 1997, Prince Charles allowed his sons to select pieces from his jewelry collection to keep,” The mirror reports. “The sapphire ring is believed to have gone to Harry, while William chose a gold Cartier watch… Shortly before William proposed to his future wife Kate in 2010, Harry offered his brother the chance to ‘offer their mother’s ring to his future wife. BRB, thinking fondly of how close these two are.
